Christian Bradley West was born
in Richmond ,
Virginia in 1978. He
has been independently studying photography for the past 10 years.
His current series tells the story of three brothers, exploring the
mythology of his own childhood as he decodes various episodes
represented by each boy’s presence. The series depicts his own
struggles with communication and adaptation within the world as his
memory currently describes the past events that have set the
foundation of his present existence. Through inner conflict comes
transcendence, a certain awareness and revival of self. Within
Christian’s images we find the dark depths that come just before the
dawn. No photo is staged. Christian allows each circumstance to
unfold as it is and has discovered in the process that the events
are mirrors of his experience.
Each photograph is printed using
a turn of the century process that involves coating aluminum and
glass plates with silver emulsion. The result is hauntingly
beautiful photographs with figures emerging from shadowed spaces
illuminated by their desire to be revealed by the light of his
lens.
Christian has been exhibiting in
the southeast for the past 6 years. He is in numerous private
collections and others including the Sir Elton John Collection and
the Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia permanent collection.
Christian is currently looking to expand his exhibition venues to
include other galleries across the country.
